The Next Paradigm - 3D Digital Audio for Post Production

Since the beginning, Advanced Audio Rentals has been on the leading edge of the most important paradigm shifts in the film industry. We have consistently pioneered the creation of new work-flow techniques by making new technologies available to solve specific problems. As examples, we fostered the wide-spread use of digital film dubbers and later, the adoption of ProTools on the scoring stage.
Every aspect of production and post-production becomes more difficult with the advent of 3D Digital Film. From an audio perspective, the new format places additional requirements on the audio post production team. Once again, Advanced Audio Rentals leads the industry in understanding these new challenges and bringing solutions to bare. We have increased our inventory of key equipment to accommodate the larger, more complex sessions. We are advocating a movement toward the use of the 10Mhz master audio clock reference, replacing the 59.94Hz NTSC video sync standard still in widespread use .

Tips & Techniques: How to Properly Generate and Distribute an Audio Clock Reference

Most digital audio gear used in post-production needs to receive some kind of facility-wide reference frequency. Quite often, the master reference generator does not have a stable, jitter-free signal, or the methods used to distribute the reference signal do not promote the retention of low-latency and low jitter.
Advanced Audio has worked extensively with Antelope Audio, a leading developer of audio clocking technology, in order to design a low-latency, low-jitter clock generation/distribution system for audio post production based on 10mhz GPS technology.
Our main design philosophy is based on the idea that using a reference frequency 1000 times the nominal sample rate (96khz) will be far more stable than a 59.94Hz video sync signal which is derived from AC wall currrent. As you can see in the diagram above, the 10mhz Atomic Clock distributes a 10mhz signal to a master studio clock, the Antelope Trinity. In turn, the Trinity resolves itself to this 10mhz signal, and becomes phase locked. The Trinity then distributes sample clock to one or several Antelope DA units. which regenerate this sample reference signal. This signal is then finally fed to individual clock inputs of various audio gear that needs sample reference. Note, a video sync signal is never used to reference any audio I/O in the clock signal distribution chain, rather, the Trinity generates resolved video sync and distributes that seperately to whatever gear needs video reference. In this way, jitter and latency is greatly reduced. The end result is lower audio converter noise and distortion.
Through multiple generations of recording, overdubbing, and mixing, this benefit becomes even more apparent. Digital audio gear also locks more quickly to this stable 10mhz-based clocking methodology, although you can apply this strategy to any master wordclock generator/distributor setup.

5 Top Tips for Stable Audio Clocking & Distribution
1. Use the best wordclock generator you can afford.
2. Use the BNC wordclock outputs instead of the AES sync out.
3. Use the best quality cabling and connections available. We use Canare serial digital video cable, Canare BNC connectors and terminators.
4. When clocking a ProTools HD system, feed the 192 interfaces separate wordclock from a generator/distribution amp; don't use loop sync from the Sync I/O. We use the Sync I/O for timecode chase only.
5. When connecting the BNC wordclock inputs of the 192 interfaces, use a Canare BNC terminator on the WC loop-through. This is a true 75 ohm termination, the self-termination that the 192 does is not adequate.
